Biography
Dr. Allen received his Ph.D. in Life-span Developmental/Experimental Psychology from Ohio State University in 1987. He completed a 2-year postdoctoral research fellowship at the Center for Aging and Human development, Duke Medical Center. Research interests include cognition, cognitive aging, and Chiari malformation Type I using behavioral, EEG, and MRI methods. His publications have appeared in Psychology and Aging, Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences, Experimental Aging Research, Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, Psychological Research, Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society (JINS), Neuropsychology, Neuropsychologia, Cortex, Psychological Medicine, and Annals of Biomedical Engineering.
Research
Co-PI, High Resolution Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Cerebellum and Brainstem in Type I Chiari Malformation: Associations with Cognitive Function and Symptomatology, Conquer Chiari Foundation Grant
- Proposes to find morphometric measures (now 3-d instead of 2-d) that will predict symptom severity after neurosurgery (and it includes an event-related fMRI task to conclusively link brain ROIs to symptom severity. Also, it is a longitudinal study (protocols at baseline before surgery and again 4-6 months after surgery).
I also in finishing up a high-resolution DTI study (diffusion tensor imaging study with Jim Houston) to examine how brainstem and cerebellum ROIs in Chiari patients versus controls are related to cognitive and affective measures. Finally, we are working on a new project on structural MRIs in Chiari malformation and headaches—and a sub-set of these folks will have full physical therapy assessments.
